Their Chemistry Was Unmatched

Chemistry students are already benefiting from the Wadsworth’s kindness

A planned gift, like the one Truman received to create the Francis T. Wadsworth Chemistry Program Endowment, can provide an abundance of opportunities for the Truman community. Established through a deferred gift of life insurance by Mrs. Marian Wadsworth in memory of her husband, Francis, this fund provides flexible, and perpetual, funding to the Chemistry Department and directly impacts the work students are doing in the classroom.

Francis graduated from Truman in 1939 with a degree in chemistry. His outstanding undergraduate education positioned him to excel in his advanced studies and career as a chemist in the petroleum industry. Marian established the fund to support student research stipends, emergency financial needs, professional development support for chemistry faculty, equipment purchases and more. Recently, the Chemistry Department used the Wadsworth Endowment to purchase two Nicolet Summit FTIR Spectrometers.

Dr. Brian Lamp, Professor of Chemistry and Chair of the Departments of Chemistry and Physics, explains, “Students use the instruments to gain insight into the molecular structure of a compound they are studying. The instruments are very robust and user-friendly, allowing students to collect data themselves, leading to a more engaged learning environment as opposed to having faculty run the instruments. The instruments are used in organic and inorganic chemistry classes as well as research projects.”
